A device for enhanced and focused listening. A device to hear the trees.
Silverwood Park contains a restored oak savanna. While in residence I was drawn to audio field recording in the open spaces. Eventually I realized that this compelling way of experiencing the environment was driving most of my time spent. I began thinking of ways to re-create this process in a purpose built way. The White Oak Listener is a stereo listening device, amplifying the sounds around a listener as they walk through the park. A set of listeners were donated to the park and continue to be used in the park's educational programming.
The printed circuit board device is assembled using cordwood construction and features stereo microphones, volume control, on/off switch, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB rechargeable battery.
Developed during an artist residency at Silverwood Park.
